Ashiatsu is an eclectic form of therapy from Japan, China, India, and Thailand. “Ashi” in Japanese means foot and “atsu” means pressure.
The pressure from the foot is broad-based and works the deep muscle groups of the back, legs, shoulders, and arms. Gravitational force is combined with centrifugal and centripetal strokes to create structural change in deep tissue in chronic soft tissue damage. Bars are used by the massage therapist for balance and lotion or oil are applied. The massage therapist also will use their hands to massage the smaller muscle groups, such as the face, feet, hands, and neck.
Ashiatsu is therapeutic for conditions such as:
- Chronic upper and lower back pain
- Scoliosis
- Tight calves
- Sciatica
- Herniated discs
Ashiatsu is contraindicated for those who suffer from osteoporosis, heart conditions, cancer, have had lasik surgery within the past 72 hours, have had breast implants in the past 9 months, or are trying to get pregnant.

What to Expect
After filling out a short intake and discussing your reasons for seeking therapeutic massage, you will be asked to undress in private. You will be completely draped and only the part your body that is being massaged will be exposed. Your modesty will be respected at all times. To get the most out of your massage so that your body is allowed to heal, it is best to simply breathe slowly and deeply. Keep your practitioner informed of any physical discomfort as well as any other distractions such as room temperature and music volume. Then relax and enjoy your massage.
